Despite humble beginnings, financial struggles, and tough circumstances, Thabiso Kabai (27) has risen to become the proud head chef at Fyre Dining Restaurant in Paarl. His journey is truly inspiring - from being cared for at Welriedal Youth Care Centre in Riebeeckstad, he has triumphed over significant hardships to reach his goals.
His story is a powerful example of hard work and the impact of having a strong support system of mentors. His mother passed away during childbirth, he was raised by his grandmother and placed at Welriedal in 2013 at the age of 14.
He says It was there that he met Alida Stevens, who taught him essential culinary skills like traditional cooking, braais, and baking. "I was encouraged to experiment with recipes, often using Alida's family cookbook to create dishes that surprised and delighted her.”
His passion grew as he began helping with catering and events. “That time taught me the value of hard work and teamwork,” Thabiso says. In the following years, he gained valuable experience in pastry and fine dining at a Bloemfontein guest house.
The hardships of 2020 did not hold him back. During the lockdown, he started a small business selling baked goods and homemade pies. After the pandemic, Thabiso received a bursary to study at the Olive Chef School. Thanks to his dedication, an Engo Bursary, and the support of mentors, he overcame financial challenges to pursue his culinary arts diploma.
Thabiso humbly says: "I hope my story will inspire youths from backgrounds like mine. They can reach for greater things, because it is absolutely possible." He also expresses his gratitude to everyone who has helped him along the way: “To those who have played a role in my life: thank you for believing in my potential.”
