April 2, 2026Founded in 2013 by Dr. Igor Scheurkogel, The Power of One (TPO) is a Goldfields-based NPO committed to empowering the community and proving that a single individual can spark meaningful change. It is driven to inspire action and show how one person’s effort can transform a community.
Uplift Media News recently spoke to the team to learn more about their work and impact.
Dr. Scheurkogel explains: “I saw a need in the community for an organisation that encourages people to take initiative and contribute to the well-being of the broader community. One person can make a difference – and one person should. Hence the name ‘The Power of One’.”
Since its inception, TPO has grown from small community projects to a wide range of initiatives, including fixing potholes, hosting fundraisers for wheelchairs, and running a food bank during COVID-19. More recently, TPO has facilitated community groups where residents can share concerns and ideas, helping neighbours support each other and connect with the right information.
“Through projects like these, TPO celebrates community resilience, neighbourly support, and the difference people can make when they come together with dedication and heart,” Dr. Scheurkogel reflects.
René van Schoor manages all the TPO groups for Welkom, Odendaalsrus, and Allanridge. “It can be challenging, but I love what I do,” she says. “Even a single message from someone who received help, or assisting an elderly resident, makes everything worthwhile.”
Dr. Scheurkogel comments: “The passion and love of one person can spark a chain reaction, encouraging responsibility and care throughout the community. TPO is entirely voluntary and donation-based, yet it shows the incredible impact one committed individual can have.”
