“The ocean is calling and I intend on answering it.”
Micaela Sardinha may live in the landlocked Goldfields of the Free State, but the ocean captured her heart at an early age – and she answered its call without hesitation. During school holidays, Micaela, a Grade 11 learner at St Andrew’s School Welkom and vice-president of the school council, travels to Cape Town to volunteer at the Two Oceans Aquarium. She is arguably the only learner in the Free State that has marine science as an eight subject.
“My goal is to study marine biology so I can make a difference and help others see the importance of our oceans. Inspired by David Attenborough, I want to better understand, protect, and care for our oceans. Even far from the coast, my passion remains strong – where there is a will, there is a way. With my family’s support, I believe I can achieve my dreams,” she says.
Her interest in marine science was sparked by a trip to Cape Town and a visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium, though her love for the ocean began much earlier. Childhood trips to the coast left lasting memories, a sense of freedom and a reminder of how much of the world is yet to be explored.
At the Aquarium, Micaela, daughter of Olga and Joao Sardinha, has gained strong communication and presentation skills while assisting with the microscope and visitors at the touch pool areas, teaching about ocean life. She loves engaging with people and helping some overcome their fears of touching marine creatures. “A defining moment for me was seeing a sea turtle up close, gliding effortlessly – a creature that has always fascinated me.”
She says St Andrew’s has fully supported her pursuit of marine science as an eighth subject, allowing her to follow her passion to the fullest. With determination and her family’s encouragement, Micaela is confident she will achieve her dreams.
